Stephen lived with the Hopi for many years, befriending them and earning their respect. He assisted several of the early ethnologists in their studies. These journals deal mostly with the years 1891-4 on First Mesa, providing extremely detailed descriptions of ceremonies and day to day life. They were edited by Elsie Clews Parsons who provided extremely useful notes. According to David Laird (who knows this sort of thing) the two volumes "Éconstitute a basic document in any significant study of the Hopi.
