Sutcliff was a British Quaker who made a number of trips to and through the United States. This account is quite readable and is based on his second trip to the U.S. from July, 1804 to August, 1806. He met Thomas Jefferson, visited Indian tribes, and commented on the customs and daily lives of post-revolutionary Americans. He spoke quite well of what he saw but regarded "slavery as a disgrace to the South, a lovely region which was 'clouded and debased by Negro slavery." One of the plates is an early view of Niagara Falls. A sound volume, but deserving of a much nicer binding. Howes S1145, Clark II: 126. Item #23394
