Traditions of De-Coo-Dah and Antiquarian Researches..

NY: Horace Thayer, 1858. Second printing. Folding frontis, 334pp, illus. Original cloth, spine faded, else clean and near fine. The title continues, "Écomprising extensive explorations, surveys, and excavations of the wonderful and mysterious earthen remains of the mound-builders in America; the traditions of he last prophet of the elk nation relative to their origin and use; and the evidences of an ancient population more numerous than the present aborigines." Of considerable value for its record of a great number of ancient mounds with clear illustrations on numerous plates all based on Pidgeon's personal examinations. He is less reliable regarding the traditions of the Sioux regarding the mounds, relying on a single aged chief and baseless hypotheses. Field 1214, Howes P351. Item #23163
