Chardon (c. 1795 - c. 1848) was one of the best known and highest paid fur traders on the upper Missouri River. His whereabouts on the frontier are well-known, the best documented period being the five years he was at Fort Clark among the Mandans. His journal documents the activities of a trader among the Indians and provides a graphic description of the 1837 smallpox epidemic which all but wiped out the Mandans.
