Hopi Songs.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1908. xi, 255pp. Original boards, remains of a paper label on spine, extremities rubbed, some surface soil, else very good. This is the fifth and concluding volume of the Journal of American Ethnology and Archaeology series. Not a periodical, the JAEA was the collected papers of the Hemenway Expeditions to the southwest. In this volume (to page 226) Gilman analyzes Hopi ceremonial songs, discusses in depth the use of the phonograph in the study of non-written music, and provides notation, but no words, for dozens of Hopi songs. The concluding pages are a short history of Mrs. Hemenway's funding of the expeditions and a bibliography of publications that resulted. Laird 8334. Item #20631
