The Great Understander; True Life Story of the Last of the Wells Fargo Shotgun Express Messengers.

Aurora, IL: William W. Walter, 1931. Frontis, 315pp. Printed boards, issued without dj. Has only the slightest of wear and browning, else a clean, near fine copy. This is the biography of Oliver Roberts de la Fontaine (b. 1857) compiled from his notes and journals. After a rugged childhood, Roberts (the name he came to use) went west where he had requisite wild west adventures with bad men, Indians, and miners in California and Nevada. William W. Walter, the compiler of this book, was a metaphysical thinker and promulgator of Eschatology, a philosophy of science and nature that is associated with Christian Science. Roberts came to "The Walter Method" late in life, calling Walter the "Great Understander," hence the odd title, although Christian Science does not pop up until the final 35 pages of the book. 6 Guns 2299.
