Notes on the Isthmus of Panama & Darien.

Exeter (Great Britain): W. Pollard, 1879. vi, 96pp, 3 folding maps. Original cloth covered boards. Wear to extremities, but gilt title on front board still quite legible. Binding sound. Minor pencil notes to two of the folding maps, and an inscription in ink to one of the maps describing Òirreconcileable differencesÓ between PeacockÕs report and another not clear to me. Inscribed by the author to the Duke of Richmond. Peacock was a surveyor in Panama who crossed the isthmus five times between 1831 and 1842. He prepared this report upon hearing that de Lesseps had convened the Congress of Savans to discuss the merits of various routes for a canal. Item #20282
