Although he had little Indian blood, William Walker (1800-1874) was a member of the Wyandot tribe and devoted much of his life to the interests of his people. He was well educated and an ardent Democrat. In 1853 he was elected provisional governor of Nebraska Territory, at the time a region embracing both Kansas and Nebraska. He was a slave owner and he strongly opposed the abolition movement, but also opposed secession. This book, a special publication of the Nebraska State Historical Society, includes a biography of Walker, documents relating to the territory, and Walker's journals from 1845 until 1854, well annotated.
