The acts and resolutions passed by the United States Congress (both House and Senate) during the first decades of the nineteenth century include some of the defining actions of the founders of the country, but at least as interesting is the minutia of operating a government at a time when legislators were still making it up as they went along. Included in this volume are acts authorizing the President to take possession of Florida, enabling Illinois to form a constitution and a resolution admitting Mississippi to the Union. Also included is an act prohibiting the importation of slaves into the United States. This was an effort seen as the first step toward legislating slavery out of existence. Item #19429
