Ethnography and Philology of the Hidatsa Indians.

Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1877. Recased with original cloth boards showing usual wear, spine strip retained with loss at end of title, else interior is clean and very good. Issued as Miscellaneous Publications No. 7 of the US Geological and Geographical Survey, Matthews was the then Assistant Surgeon for the US Army. In two sections, the first dealing with the ethnography of the Hidatsa - also known as the Gros Ventres of the Missouri or the Minitari - the second with the tribe's language, concluding with a Hidatsa dictionary. F. V Hayden was the Geologist-in-Charge at the time and he determined that this treatise was of such merit that it should be published as a separate volume to give credit due to Matthews and credit to the importance of the work rather than to include it in Hayden's later published reports.
