Navajo Omens and Taboos.
by Newcomb, Franc Johnson

Publisher Information:
Santa Fe, NM: The Rydal Press, 1940.

Numbered and inscribed. 79pp, 14 b/w illus, double page hand colored reproduction of a sand painting. Slight edgewear to the dust jacket with a couple of minor chips, internally clean. A splendid, near fine copy of a scarce book scarcer still thus. Franc Johnson had been a BIA school teacher at Fort Defiance for two years when she married Arthur Newcomb and bought a trading post on the Navajo Reservation in 1914. Although without special training as an ethnographer, her position gave her an entree to Indian cultural activities that she used with skill and sensitivity. This book is a collection of native traditions, taboos, and household sayings peculiar to the Navajo.
