Frances P. Harper,
2 volumes. xxx, 312, illus, folding map; vi, 313-608pp, illus. Original cloth, shelfwear, else clean and very good. Garces began his missionary work at San Xavier del Bac in 1768. In 1775 he accompanied de Anza overland to California, then headed off on his own and established initial contacts with the Hopi. In 1776 he set out again for the land of the Hopis, ascending the Colorado River to the Mojave villages and encountering the Havasupai, a tribe hitherto unknown to the Spanish. His Diaro is an excellent source of information on the land and native people, here with copious annotations by Coues. Howes C801.
